020 – Can’t Understand Them

Does today’s strip look a little different?

As one of the early readers of this strip, you get the unique opportunity to see it evolve at a pretty rapid pace. It is something never really seen in newspaper strips mainly because the artists have a lot of experience under their belts. They have been working to develop their craft for many, many years and have pretty much figure out what works and what doesn’t work long before they finally land that sweet syndication deal.

It works a bit differently for the web cartoonist unfortunately. I am learning as I go, and you get to see it happen in real time. More on that here.

Today’s commentary track also speaks to the evolution of the look of Robot Beach.

  1. I like the new look. It does look more “hand-drawn”.

Is the use of “your” instead of “you’re” voluntary (Carl)? (I’m French, I may be missing the gag here)

  2. Matt says:

Great. Leave it to a Frenchmen to point out my tenuous hold on English grammar. :P

I fixed my error. Thanks for the note!

  3. Maddy says:

Looking good but I miss his eyebrows…

  4. Matt says:

Actually, he was never really supposed to have eyebrows. (unless he was emoting something that required it.) I drew them on last week because I forgot that fact…and I hadn’t drawn him in like, two months.

  5. Russ says:

    Looks good! Keep ‘em coming!

    Looks great!

Regarding your commentary, once upon a time newspaper strips did evolve over time, often quite drastically. Look at For Better or For Worse, Garfield, and Beetle Bailey, for three particularly drastic examples.

Of course, these days, newspaper strip space is so limited that something has to already be finely-polished to the ridiculous samey standards in order to fill a specific niche that the newspapers are actively looking for, so of course there’s no experimentation.

  7. Matt says:

Interesting thoughts fluffy. Although I would say that in several of those cases, the changes in the strips are more of a side-step than anything. A stylistic change that is neither better nor worse, just different. Like…say… For Better or For Worse. (so that’s why they call it that!)

  8. Paul says:

I’m liking it, but I honestly can’t see *that* big of a difference. Maybe it’s just my eyes though.
