I’m kinda in over my head right now with everything that is going on, so I won’t be posting any new strips this week. However, my three-year-old daughter stepped up to fill in for me today! She drew this awesome drawing of Carl by the ocean on the iPad (all I did was piece it together in Photoshop. I swear!)

So, she will be taking over drawing duties by this time next year. I look forward to that.

Many of you will know about Dave Kellet and Fred Schroder’s soon-to-be-released documentary about the rise and fall and rise again of perhaps the greatest art form around: Cartooning.

As explained in their own words:

This film is our love-letter to the art form: Bringing together 60 of the world’s best cartoonists into one extraordinary, feature-length documentary. The film sits down with creators to talk about how cartooning works, why it’s so loved, and how as artists they’re navigating this dicey period between print and digital options…when neither path works perfectly. We want this film to capture the extraordinary people behind the comics you love, to show how they work, and to ask the question: “Where does the art form go from here?”

Dave and Fred have set up a Kickstarter page to help fund the post production and distribution of the film. For those who are unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it is basically a pre-order system with some extra goodies thrown in. You can pledge a certain amount and you only pay if that project gets funded fully. So, if you were to pledge 25 bucks, you get the DVD shipped as soon as it is available. Not only that, your pledge also helps fund the project and get it produced. It’s a win-win for both artist and audience.

At this point, Stripped has been fully funded! So why pledge now? Well, not only can you reserve your copy of the DVD, but you also will be helping to put the finishing touches on the film including adding additional animation elements, sound mastering, and travel expenses for the filmakers, crew and equipment to grab interviews with Lalo Alcaraz, Keith Knight, Matt Groening, Garry Trudeau, Randall Munroe, Art Speigelman, and others!

Dude, Pixar’s new film “Brave” Looks absolutely beautiful! I’ve seen some concept art previously, but it can be hard to judge the final look of a film from concept art. It appears that Pixar is going for a very high-fidelity looks with this film. Lots of rich color and detail. And her hair! I remember a time in the world of 3D animation when short, spiky fur was insanely difficult to produce. Man, have the times changed. I can’t wait to see more! I think we can all agree that Friday night is for partying, whooping it up, and a heroic amount of debauchery. But what about Friday evening? You don’t want to start your drinkin’ too early. If you do, you’ll end up being the first one to pass out amongst your friends, and we all know the horrible / hilarious things we do to our unconscious friends. If you’re lucky, all they’ll do is write on you in permanent marker. The less fortunate usually wake up in a foreign country and, due to the language barrier, have to use pantomime to explain to the local authorities that his friends were the ones who painted his body like a honey bee and left him naked on their chamber of commerce’s main meeting table.

You don’t want that, do you?

Instead, sit back and listen to a live recording of the Geeks of Steel podcast this Friday night! Geeks of Steel is a weekly podcast hosted by me and Matt Forcum Adam Huber (the cartoonist behind Robot Beach that Bug comic) where we discuss all sorts of geeky stuff. This will be our first attempt at doing a live show and we’re hoping, assuming the technology doesn’t fail us (or vice versa), to make this a regular thing.
